Today was weigh in day for our city's 30 Day Weight Loss Challenge. I am sitting here trying to convince myself that I can stay off the scale for the duration of the contest so the end result is a surprise to me as well. I think I'm going to give it a go, but I know I'm going to want to step on that stupid thing between now and then. I'll try. I'll really, really try.
I think I mentioned previously that I hit my 120 pounds of loss but started experimenting with some fibrous, healthy carbs to see if more fuel would help counter the long hours I spend active in the gym. I immediately bloated and saw a 2 pound increase on the scale. That was a bummer but, it didn't break my heart because now I know how to correct an issue and get back on track. The old me would have thrown my hands up and said, "Well this isn't working so f*ck it!" I'd then proceed to stuff my face full of garbage forgetting that the temporal pleasure that comes from food binging causes long-term, painful damage. By calendar calculations, it is also near that time of the month, so the few extra carbs and PMS combo hit me hard.
Fortunately, Copper Sky (our city's community fitness facility) used their InBody scale to record our weigh ins. The InBody is a body composition analyzer. "Body composition analysis is essential to completely understand health and weight as traditional methods of assessing health, such as BMI, can be misleading. Going beyond your bathroom scale, body composition analysis breaks down your body into four components: fat, lean body mass, minerals, and body water."
I had a recent InBody scan done on January 2, 2018. The results relevant to this post are as follows:
Total Body Water in Lbs: 119.7
Body Fat Mass in Lbs: 170.4
Today's scan (just 5 days later):
Total Body Water in Lbs: 123.9
Body Fat Mass in Lbs: 166.0
PMS IT IS!
This makes me feel so much better about my huge week in the gym. I was starting to worry that I was overtraining, not eating enough, pushing myself too hard, etc.
This is why the scale can't be trusted. It is a tool I use very regularly but you cannot rely on the scale to show you the big picture. In five days my body has decided to pack on extra water but has still managed to shed body fat. My "weight" shows I'm up 3 pounds. I know it won't last long and that will only prove beneficial to me in the challenge. So, maybe it was good to go into this with some PMS advantage. haha.
I think I'll take some measurements tonight and start tracking those more. I haven't yet because the loose skin has been such an issue and it's hard to measure accurately each time. If you see me around town with some Sharpie X's on my batwings, you'll know why.
The exact numbers don't really matter much because I feel incredible and am accomplishing more and more each day. The numbers just make it very easy to measure and share success because I can't quantify how I feel. I feel FANF*CKINGTASTIC...whatever that equates too.
"Weight loss can change your whole character. That always amazed me: Shedding pounds does change your personality. It changes your philosophy of life because you recognize that you are capable of using your mind to change your body." - Jean Nidetch
